A good cry seems like an oxymoron. We mostly think that the only good cry is the one
we avoid. Yet, the Bible tells us that crying can be even better than laughing (Eccl 7:3)…And all
the great saints cried. Jesus himself at the death of one of his best friends (Jn 11:33-35) and as
he anticipated the destruction of Jerusalem (Lk 19:41-44).
Hagar and Ishmael cry in the desert when the run out of water and anticipate their own
painful death (Gen 21:14-16)…but God has other plans for them (Gen 21:17-20).
David sin winds up with an unwanted pregnancy, deceit, even murder…and then the
death of his baby son (2 Sam 12:19-20)…but David moves beyond his tear-soaked paralysis into
a new life of blessing and opportunity (2 Sam 12:19-25).
We learned that Jesus’s own tears shaped his soul as our tears do our own (Heb 5:7-8).
