As an example to all of us, the Apostle Paul mentored a young man named Timothy who became his living legacy. They met in a town called Lystra on Paul’s second missionary journey…(Acts 16:1-5) and the two became inseparable in their ministry goals ever since.
Timothy co-authored several Pauline letters, including the one to Philippi (Phil 1:1). Paul lauds Timothy to this church he founded and loved (Phil 2:19-23).
Paul calls Timothy his spiritual son (1 Tim 1:1; 2 Tim 1:1-5). He encourages Timothy to pass on his faith (2 Tim 2:1-2) and stay as focused and as committed as a soldier, athlete, or farmer (2 Tim 2:3-7).
Then Paul pictures himself as a fighter and a runner (2 Tim 4:6-7) inviting Timothy to fight as well (1 Tim 6:12).
Finally, Paul becomes vulnerable with Timothy pleading with him to come quickly,
before winter (2 Tim 4:9, 21).
In what way are you like Paul mentoring the next generation? In what way are you like Timothy, a living legacy to someone else who loves Jesus in a most deep and intimate way?
