Many of us wrestle with issues associated with shame, but probably none as much as those who have fallen into prostitution. Condemned in the Scriptures (Prov 6:23-25), viewed as the lowest of activities (Prov 6:26), a pitfall for many a strong man (Jud 16:1-2) or those who merely have the opportunity (1 Cor 6:15-17).
But Jesus, takes a compassionate view of prostitutes. One of his number one women leaders, Mary Magdalene, may have been a prostitute herself (Luke 8:1-3). Dn the immoral woman who crashed Simon the Pharisee’s party in search of Jesus was undoubtedly one (Lk 7:36-46). But she found peace, love, and salvation due to Jesus’ forgiveness and her faith (Lk 7:47-50).
As Leonard Cohen underscores, “Everything has a crack in it; that's how the light gets in.”
