This morning I would like to suggest that part of the Good News about Lent is that it stimulates good questions. And one of the best is the question Jesus asked his disciples: “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”(Matt 16:26)
I wonder if Jesus was reflecting on his own experience in the wilderness where Satan proposed giving him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor (Matt 4:8-10). When all we really need is to give God his due (Deut 6:5-13)…to love God and others (Mk 12:28-31).
Malachi asks the question “Will a mere mortal rob God? Yet you rob me.” Which creates a counter question: ‘How are we robbing you?’ (Mal 3:8)…which is a question well worth asking if we are headed toward San Jose.
Indeed, we can rob God financially (Mal 3:8-12)…but in so many other ways as well…by condemning and judging rather than by giving and forgiving (Lk 6:37-38).
The right questions will eventually take us back to God…He alone is the source all questions and answers.
