This morning we conclude a series of messages focusing on the last prayer that Jesus prayed: “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” Lk 23:46.  This little prayer says a lot and I would like to unpack it phrase by phrase.
First off, what does “my spirit” mean? I think we can find some help from thinking about the interrelationship of the breath of life (Gen 2:7) and being born again (John 3:3-5) to the Spirit of God.
What does “commit” mean?
How about the hands of God (Isa 48:13; Ps 139:7-10) and especially, the Father’s hands?
(Jn 10:27-30).
What did the darkness signify and the temple curtain torn in two (Lk 23:44).
Did Jesus breathe his last as his own volition?
