When Jesus uttered those iconic words of the cross “I thirst” (John 19:28-29) was there something more going on than pure physical need? Was Jesus alluding to Psalm 22:15 “My mouth is dried up like a potsherd”? Or Psalm 69:21 “They put gall in my food and gave me vinegar for my thirst.”
I sense that Jesus was uttering a prayer to God similar to Psalm 63:1:
You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you;
I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you,
in a dry and parched land where there is no water.
Was Jesus actually thirsty for the cup the Father had given to him? (Matt 26:37-42 ; Jn 18:10-11).
And, are we invited by Jesus to thirst just like he did?
