This morning I want to speak to those of us are going through what Saint John of the Cross called: “The dark night of the soul” …. Something I believe the Apostle Paul knew something about as do most all of us. “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me?”
(Rom 7:24) asks the Apostle.
The context paints a picture of the higher nature and lower nature at war with the lower nature coming out on top (Rom 7:21- 24)…until we get to Rom 7:25 and all of chapter 8 where a different, far more triumphant portrait. This vicious circle ended at the cross with Christ’s death and our faith (Romans 8:1-13).
My understanding is that God wants us to know we are his beloved children (Rom 8:14- 39) and that nothing, certainly not our pain and suffering can keep us from his love. I believe this is the gospel message—connecting the love of God to every
situation…including maybe most of all, the dark night of the soul.
