FIRM UP YOUR FOUNDATIONS

3/17/2024 Series on Lent: What Does the Bible Say About Spiritual Growth? Psalm 11

What are the foundational values in your life and how secure are they (Ps 11:1-3)? This is the theme I would like us to look at this next to last Sunday of Lent. I think for King David, one of his most important foundations was his friends…especially after losing his friendship with King Saul (1 Sam 22:1-2; 2 Sam 23:13-17).
Another major foundation was his calling to be king (1 Sam 16:6-13; 2 Sam 2:1-4) a role he treasured most of his adult life.
One essential foundation never really materialized for David in a healthy way. His family was a mess. Eight wives, numbers of concubines, eighteen children…more than any of us can keep up with.
And then David had a roving eye. He found a married woman, committed adultery and had her husband killed to cover up his sin. All this was brought to light by Nathan the prophet as well as the severe consequences (2 Sam 12:1-12).
But despite the mess, David had a love for God and God had a love for him and this was his most secure foundation (1 Sam 13:14; Acts 13:22-23)…one open to all of us.
