I think the most of us wrestle with some degree of excessive fear or paranoia…largely because we have failed to attain or fear we might lose something that this world considers to be a value. But Jesus wonders why we value this world so much when all that really matters is our soul?
(Mk 8:36).
His disciples became deeply afraid, paranoid perhaps, when a storm erupted on the Sea of Galilee while Jesus remained asleep (Matt 8:23-25). Meanwhile Jesus challenged his disciples to grow their faith, nurture their soul instead even as he stilled the storm (Matt 8:26-27).
The storms of life have a way of shaking all of us, and yet when our soul is founded in Christ, the storm will only come and go…the foundation will remain secure (Matt 7:24-27)
Augustine’s Prayer
O Father, light up the small duties of this day’s life:
May they shine with the beauty of your countenance.
May we believe that glory can dwell in the commonest task of every day.
Augustine (Gire p 168)
