Many of us have been relatively poor and some down to their last dollar—seemingly hopeless (Prov 31:6-7). Ironically, Jesus says: “Blessed are the poor.” (Lk 6:20)…which may refer to many different kinds of poverty including spiritual (Matt 5:3).
Jesus knows all about our poverty, revealing himself in special ways when we are poor (Heb 4:14-15) through mercy, compassion (Zech 7:8-10) and generous giving (Deut 14:28-29).
As the Body of Christ, we are called on to share our gifts with one another which binds us together…in poverty and wealth (1 Cor 12:12-26).
Conclusion: Poverty places us in precarious situations that require hope and courage as well as the intervention of those more fortunate…All part of God’s plan to bring us together.
