David is one of the most complex characters in the Bible…a warrior-king who is also a shepherd-harpist…He can be viciously vindictive and a man after God’s own heart at the same time. In Psalm 23 we see that compassionate and caring heart as he sings-prays to Yahweh:
You are my providing shepherd (Ps 23:1). You lead, guide, restore, refresh with green grass and quiet waters and a path that leads in the right way (Ps 23:2-3). You are there with comfort even in the darkest of valleys (Ps 23:4). You turn the battlefield into a banqueting table with each of us as the guest of honor (Ps 23:5). Your goodness and love is ever present, always, for now and forever (Ps 23:6).  Take heart if we might be a bit complex ourselves…The Lord is our shepherd too!
