I have the monster of wrath or anger inside of me so I know it is a deadly sin. Even though Jesus expressed anger (Mk 11:15-16) and I know how helpful it can be in certain situations, I also know how demon-like it can be as well as did Cain (Gen 4:1-5). God’s question to Cain remains pertinent to me as well: Why are you angry? (Gen 4:6)
Another angry man pictured in the Bible is Jonah, who fled God’s presence (Jonah 1:1- 3), only to be given a second chance at his assignment to preach repentance to the city of Nineveh (Jonah 2:10-3:2). But once again Jonah got angry with God for his compassion toward these undeserving people… only to hear God ask another question:“Is it right for you to be angry?”(Jonah 4:2-3).
Jesus shares some insight on anger in his Sermon on the Mount (Matt 5:22 ). He seems to say it is far more important to listen to others than to condemn them for not thinking the right way.
But my biggest problem is not anger with God or others…I am angry with myself and find myself in need of forgiving myself or losing a grip on my own soul.
