In a nutshell, the Good News about Pentecost is that confused people like you and me, could understand and be understood by one another. For forty days, confused disciples were trying to understand what Jesus was trying to communicate to them through his resurrection appearances (Acts 1:3-5). Jesus told them that things would begin to make sense if they would but wait in prayer for the coming of his Spirit (Acts 1:12-14).
Ten days later along with a violent wind and tongues of fire, the disciples began speak in a Spirit-filled way (Acts 2:1-4). Remarkably, people from all over the world could understand and be understood and they all wondered what this meant (Acts 2:5-12).
One thing it did mean was that there was reversal of the confusion caused by the Tower of Babel (Gen 11:1-9). The value system of bullies and billionaires, greed and selfishness, was replaced by compassion and sharing, community and care (Acts 2:42-47).
It is this new community called the church that I hope HP models and we remain of subset of the Kingdom of God’s peace rather than confusion which reigns in our society and world (1 Cor 14:33 KJV).
