The Doobie Brothers invite us to listen to the music in hopes that it will change our ways of living with each other…a very biblical notion indeed. The Bible is all for us singing a new song (Ps 33:1-3 ; 40:1-3; 96:1-13; 98:1-3), clapping our hands (Ps 98:4-8) and dancing in response (Ps 149:1-5).
Unfortunately, some of us our so stuck up and hard-hearted that we either can’t hear or won’t listen when God himself is playing the music (Matt 11:16-19).
We fail to perceive that God is always speaking…throughout his universe…in silence (Ps 19:1-6) and through his word (Ps 19:7-11) leading us toward a deep and cleansing introspection (Ps 19:12-14).
So who is willing this Sunday to listen to the music with the Doobie Brothers and dance to the music with Sly and the Family Stone? Or even better, with Jesus?
