We continue on year long series on Prayer: Breaking Through to the Other Side…a question emerges for most of us: How can I be sure of this?
How can I be sure I am on the right road, that God is out there and listening, that I am doing my part in the process? Is there a sign? Is there some type of assurance?
I tend to believe that the only thing we can be sure of is that we need to keep growing (1 Cor 13:11).
Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed relentlessly for a child only to be visited by an angel and told that their prayers were heard, a child was on its way (Lk 1:11-17). But Zechariah asked “How can I be sure of this? (Lk 1:18).
John turned out to be a bit weird (Matt 3:1-4) attracting both followers (Matt 3:5-6) and critics (Matt 3:7-8)…and then mortal enemies (Matt 14:3-10).
I wonder if Zechariah and Elizabeth continued to ask: “How can I be sure of this?” Or did their question evolve to “How can I grow through this?”
For ultimately, growth not assurance is the only path to the Other Side (Lk 2:52; 2 Cor 3:18)
