For a mom who was really big on the importance of taking on responsibility and becoming a man, she had an admonition that has always challenged me in certain ways. She would tell me to “Be a kid as long as you can…adulthood will come all too soon. Enjoy being a child while you have the chance.”

Obviously, some people need to hear the counter advice… “It’s time for you to grow up!” I think this is one of the things the Apostle Paul was trying to communicate in the Love Chapter when he said to put away childish things (1 Cor 13:11). Love is the opposite of this kind of childishness (1 Cor 13:4-7).

In Ephesians 4 Paul admonishes his listeners to grow up into the fullness of Christ (Ephesians 4:11-13)…otherwise we will remain as unstable as infants (Ephesians 4:14-16).

There is a worldly type of childishness that leads to jealousy and quarreling (1 Cor 3:1-3). Unable to feed themselves, overgrown babies leech off of others (Heb 5:12-14). We need to infants regarding evil but mature in thinking (1 Cor 14:20).

The great thing about children is that they can live in the moment…which is where God is as well (Exodus 3:13-14). It is this unique ability, to become free of from self absorption and the need for self approval that enables us to enter the kingdom of God (Matt 18:1-5).
